In October 2022 Taylor Swift spilled all the tea over her ‘nightmare’ audition for The Graham Norton Show, and trust us, it’s a wild ride. It turns out that she was considered for two roles: Cosette and Eponine. While her gaze screamed Cosette, her voice was more Eponine. Even Swift admitted, “I didn’t intend to get the part.” However, the chance to audition alongside his favorite Eddie Redmayne was too good to pass up.

So, she flew to London for a screen test and was confronted with the reality of the 19th century. “When I got there they dressed me up in a full 19th-century street urchin outfit and said they were going to paint my teeth brown, and I said, ‘You’re going to do that after I meet Eddie Redmayne, right?’ » she said. Yes, it was as awkward as it sounds.

Fastwho described the experience as a nightmare, said she was virtually unrecognizable and felt more “like death” than a Broadway-ready ingénue. So when she finally met Redmayne, she was so shy that she didn’t even want to open her mouth to say anything. Redmayne, who had already been cast as Marius, didn’t expect things to go this way. He said: “I thought we’d just be singing along to each other – I didn’t know we’d be in each other’s arms.”

But the awkwardness didn’t end there. Redmayne admitted that he indulged in garlic pizza and dough balls before the big stage. “All I could think about was my garlic breath as Taylor died in my arms,” he admitted, adding a little humor to an otherwise depressing situation.

Although Swift didn’t land a role in Les Miserables, which went on to receive eight Oscar nominations and earn $441 million worldwide, she jumped at the chance to work full-time with Hooper. A few years later, she appeared in the director’s film Cats, taking on a supporting role and recording an original song for the film. Okay, so it’s not quite Les Miserables, but it’s still a memorable collaboration with Hooper.

It’s safe to say that the Les Miserables story may not have been Swift’s favorite chapter, but hey, it definitely makes for a fun audition story.
