Bill Maher explains why Trump won black voters despite ‘racist’ rhetoric

Bill Maher and Stephen A. Smith recently shared their views on why Donald Trump gained increased support among black voters during the last presidential election cycle.

During an in-depth conversation about Maher Club Random PodcastTwo media figures analyzed how Trump’s rhetoric resonates with voters of color.

“You know what I think black people think about Trump? Is he racist? Yes, but they think every white person is racist to some extent. Do they think white people talk like Trump behind closed doors?” said Maher, host. HBO‘s Real time.

“Over there!” Smith replied. “That second part is very, very important.”

Smith, who often appears on ESPNexplained that while he does not believe that all white people are racist, there is a general understanding among black Americans that white people often have different life experiences.

“When you talk about the way Trump talks, we think, ‘So this is the first time he’s talked like that?’ When did he become president?’” Smith said. “We know better. We know better than that.

“We know this isn’t the first time, and we know that the people he’s been friends with all these years, he spoke that way to you and you didn’t have any problem with it. Don’t act like you have a problem with it now.”

Nationally, Trump made significant gains among black voters during this election, especially among black men. According to Associated PressNearly 30% of black men under 45 voted for him, nearly double the 2020 vote. His support among Latino voters has also increased.

While Trump has been accused of using racist or offensive language, many voters prioritized issues like the economy, immigration and housing over those issues.

Maher criticized Democrats for not addressing the basic needs of voters, arguing that they are focusing too much on demographics.

“I don’t think his motivation is ‘I don’t like black people.’ I think his motivation is ‘everyone should love me,'” Maher said.

Smith echoed Maher’s frustrations and expressed dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party’s approach to voter participation.

“The Democrats got on my last nerve. If it weren’t for Trump, I would vote Republican because I’m tired of the way they live,” Smith said. “To get my vote, it’s always about the other side and you engaging in demagoguery rather than actually articulating what you’re proposing to me.”
