Winter temperatures will set in throughout the region

Winter appears to be arriving early across the region as travelers turn to the roads and skies on their way home.

Winter won’t officially begin until Saturday, December 21, but the region will get a taste of it in the next few days.

Some areas woke up to snow Friday morning, although roads in the area were mostly clear.

However, cold temperatures are forecast for the region over the next couple of days.

Forecasters are calling for unseasonably low temperatures this weekend and early next week, with wind chills reaching single digits above zero.

Weather conditions in the Beckley area are forecast to remain below freezing through the weekend and much of next week.

The Beckley area will be mostly sunny today with a high around 32 degrees, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston. Winds could reach 25 mph. There is a 40 per cent chance of snowfall tonight, mainly after 10pm, with a low around 23C.

There’s a 50 percent chance of snow expected Sunday with less than a half-inch of snow. Temperatures are expected to be around 34 with wind gusts up to 22 mph.

Monday is expected to be partly cloudy with a high of around 27 and a low of around 14.

Forecasters expect temperatures to remain in the 20s to 30s until Thursday, when the thermometer could rise above the 40s. Overnight lows will remain in the teens and 20s.

The weather in Fayette County is expected to be similar to the weather in the Beckley area, according to the NWS forecast.

Temperatures are expected to rise into the 20s to 30s during the day before falling into the mid to upper teens at night.

Sunday is the best chance for significant snow accumulation in Fayette County, where up to an inch of snow on the ground is possible.

In Mercer County, a severe weather forecast issued by the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Virginia, said colder temperatures will occur primarily in the late night and early morning hours, especially at higher elevations.

No warnings or warnings were issued Friday.

Snow is possible again on Sunday.

The extended forecast calls for a chance of snow showers Sunday afternoon, with a chance of snow overnight.

However, according to Friday’s forecast, significant amounts of savings were not expected.

Daytime highs on Monday and Tuesday will be around 20 degrees, and overnight lows will be around 15 degrees.

Wednesday afternoon temperatures will rise to around 38 degrees, with another chance of rain and snow Wednesday evening. Temperatures could rise to nearly 43 degrees by Thursday.

High temperatures in the mid to upper 30s are forecast for Greenbrier, Wyoming and Monroe counties this weekend and early next week. Overnight lows will be in the mid to teens and lower 20s. Significant snow accumulations are not expected.

A slow-moving La Niña could affect upcoming winter conditions across much of the country, forecasters say. This winter may bring wetter conditions than usual.
