Man dead, no police injured after police shooting in west Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Police say a man is dead in an officer-involved shooting in a west Phoenix neighborhood late Thursday.

According to Phoenix police Sgt. Rob Scherer, authorities initially responded to a call from a man following an armed suspect into a convenience store near 83rd Avenue and McDowell Road around 10:30 p.m., the caller reported knowing the suspect and that he was pursuing another person.

An argument ensued between them, and then the suspect pulled out a gun. However, Scherer says the suspect then fled the scene.

Police tracked the suspect’s vehicle and attempted to stop him, but he fled. A Phoenix police helicopter tracked the man to an area near 79th Avenue and Mitchell Drivesouth of Indian School Road, where he jumped out of the car and ran into the backyard of a nearby home.

As officers searched the area, they heard a gunshot and found an armed man in the backyard. Authorities said the suspect matched the description given to the driver who jumped from the vehicle.

As officers set up a perimeter around the home, the man pointed a gun at the officer, who then fired several shots, Scherer said. The man was hit at least once and died on the spot.

No police officers were injured as a result of the shootout, and a firearm was found at the scene.

The investigation is expected to last several hours; Residents are asked to avoid the area. The suspect’s name has not been released.

This is the 49th officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County and the 84th in the state in 2024.
